Volunteer Opportunity

Parent Mentor

Support families who have recently received a Down syndrome diagnosis by sharing your experience and providing emotional support.

4-6 hours per month, flexible scheduling
Phone/Video calls, occasional in-person meetings

About This Role

Parent Mentors are the heart of our new family support program. Drawing on your own experience as a parent of a child with Down syndrome, you'll provide support, information, and hope to families at the beginning of their journey. You'll remember those early days—the questions, the fears, the search for connection. As a mentor, you can be the reassuring voice that helps a new family see the beautiful path ahead.

Responsibilities

  • Reach out to newly matched families within 48 hours
  • Provide ongoing support through calls, texts, or meetings
  • Share your family's journey and available resources
  • Connect families to IWA programs and services
  • Attend monthly mentor support meetings
  • Complete required documentation after interactions

Requirements

  • Parent or caregiver of a child with Down syndrome (any age)
  • At least 2 years past your own diagnosis experience
  • Strong listening and communication skills
  • Non-judgmental, supportive approach
  • Comfortable sharing your personal experience
  • Commit to one-year volunteer term
